I knew from a young age that I would study the environment -- rivers were dead and exuded a foul odor, lakes were filled with leaches, black particles fell from the air, and friends died before graduating from high school. In the 1960's, there were no environmental degrees but with the help of advisors, we pieced together what we thought an environmental program would look like.
